Wedding Makeup, Beauty, and Fragrance Tips

Decisions about bridal hair, makeup, and fragrance should be made well in advance of the wedding day. Many brides prefer to have their wedding hair and makeup done by a professional hair stylist and makeup artist. It's important to book the appointments with plenty of time before the wedding. A trial run is also recommended approximately 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding day. Most beauty professionals will accept bookings up to a year in advance of the wedding.

The makeup artist will need to know what time of the day the wedding will be taking place, also if the venue will be happening inside or outdoors at a garden or beach setting. The intensity of bridal makeup needs to be adjusted to photograph properly in varied lighting conditions that occur at indoor or outdoor venues. Wedding makeup should enhance the bride’s features but still make her appear natural looking. Wedding makeup should not follow trends, or have the appearance of wearing a mask. It should always appear classic and timeless.

If the wedding is in the fall or winter, a regular moisturizer should be applied about 5 minutes before the foundation. Eye makeup should be intensified with soft, dark shades of grey, charcoal, or brown tones. To create thicker looking lashes, fill the upper lash line in with a dark powder. Add warmth to the cheeks and lips with slightly deeper tones of rose or sheer plum to avoid looking pale or washed out.

Spring and summer brides with oily skin should use a foundation primer to avoid excess shine in warm temperatures. Select a powder blush in soft shades of pale pink and rose to flatter fair to medium skin tones. Mauve or dark rose works well with black and olive complexions. Sheer gel or cream blush is recommended for dry skin. These products add moisturize and allow the natural skin texture to show through. It’s best to avoid the stark contrast of dark shades of lipstick for spring or summer weddings. Go with a neutral lip pencil color then add a pale gloss, or a berry color stain to the lips.

Over 70 percent of brides purchase a new fragrance to wear on their wedding day. Soft, floral blend fragrances are the most popular choice, in both classic and modern fragrance brands. Designer fragrances chosen most often by grooms have a clean, modern scent that combines warm spices with citrus blends. The groom should apply his fragrance sparingly to avoid overpowering the bride’s fragrance.

Wedding makeup, fragrance, and hairstyle should all work together to enhance the radiance and beauty of the bride on her special day.
